Golden rule: blot, don’t rub
Press a clean white cloth from the outside in.
Coffee and tea
Warm water, a teaspoon of washing-up liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar; blot, rinse, dry.
Red wine
Absorb, then cold water. Hot water sets the stain.
Grease
Cornflour or talc for half an hour, then vacuum.
When to call a professional
Old stains, linen or velvet, or water rings need extraction cleaning.
